Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sound of one's tap shoes hitting the floor as a percussive instrument. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the dance. It is widely performed as a part of musical theatre; rhythm tap focuses more on musicality.
Our Tap Classes
Preliminary Tap level 1 and 2:
Preliminary Tap levels one and two are a introduction to tapping technique. In these levels students learn the basics of tap, how to hold and move the foot in the correct positions and how to use the ankles, knees and hips.
Elementary levels: (Bronze/Silver/Gold)
Elementary levels can be studied by students from the age of 6 with no upper age limit. In Bronze, Silver and Gold they begin with the foundations of tap, learning movements that make up their tap vocabulary. Students work towards an exam learning set exercises and routines which they perform for an examiner as a soloist.
Intermediate levels: (Bronze/Silver/Gold)
Intermediate levels can be studied by students from the age of 9 with no upper age limit (however basic tapping knowledge up to Elementary Gold must be known to complete these levels). In this class they will extend their knowledge of tapping combinations and perform full routines and exercises for an examiner.
Advanced Levels: (Bronze/Silver/Gold)
Advanced levels broaden the students’ knowledge of steps; students will learn more complex tapping combinations and steps and again show them in set exercises and routines for an examiner. Theory is also part of these levels.
Advanced Gold Star:
For students who have completed levels Intermediate and above and wish to continue their training at a professional level
Black Swan School of Dance endeavours to foster their student’s love of dance through encouragement and acknowledging each students personal achievements.
